I am moving to another country and I have 2 spore prints that I want to take either in checked luggage or carry on.
Aluminum foil shows up on the radar, so what kind of problem may i face?
How to prevent it?

Depends which country you are going to. In the vast majority of countries a spore print is far too grey an area to pursue anything more than confiscate it, if even that.

If you're really worried just post it to yourself.

Northerner covered everything already, but I am in the same boat as you are and I have had similar thoughts and questions.

I ended up sending my collection via post to a friend who already resides in the country I will go to. He received it savely. Now I don't need worry about these kind of things and can concentrate on the move.

If you don't want foil to show up on the scanner, you could use laminating sheets instead of foil to make prints.

Spore prints on foil are usually fine, I travel with them all the time - never had a problem.

They don't look sketchy on the xray.

Maybe put the foil squares inside an electrical item?
A friend has put his acid tabs, folded in foil, inside the battery cover on his go-pro before

If it is illegal to have spores in the country/state you are traveling to or from then do not fly with them.

That seems a bit paranoid - it's pretty difficult to tell whether spores are the illegal type - they would need to grow them in a lab and test the mycelium for psilocybin. If customs finds them and they aren't labeled as something illegal, they will just throw them away.

Mailing is always an option.

Airport security isn't really looking for tinfoil packets.

FAQs

What to do with spore prints? ›

In the first phase, you will use a small part of the spore print to dilute it in water and absorb it with a sterile syringe. Next, you will only have to keep the syringe loaded with spores for a couple of days so that they germinate, become "activated", and are ready to be inoculated on a medium.

Why no spore print? ›

Some mushrooms are too young or too old to produce spores. Mushrooms collected at high elevations will typically not produce a spore print at lower elevations. Sometimes, the colour can vary depending on the thickness of the spore print.

How to check mushroom spore print? ›

Remove the stem of the specimen and place the cap of the mushroom on the spore print card with the gills (or pores) facing downward. Cover it or leave it undisturbed overnight and compare the colour of the resulting print with descriptions in your field guide.

How long do you have to leave spore prints? ›

Cover the mushroom with a bowl (to stop it drying out and to reduce air currents that might spoil your print by blowing the tiny spores around). 3. Leave everything where it is for at least 2 hours or longer (overnight).

What is the best way to preserve spore prints? ›

To preserve your spore print: Spore prints can be preserved on paper or foil by spraying them lightly with an artist spray. Hair spray works well, too! If you're feeling artistic, why not let the spores “float” down onto the paper in patterns resulting from air currents in the room?

What is the difference between spores and spore prints? ›

Over time, the cap will drop a pattern of spores onto the surface. This is known as a spore print. Spore prints vary in size, shape, and color depending on the mushroom species and how long it's left to print. A small spore print can contain millions of individual spores and can make several spore syringes.

What is the point of a spore print? ›

Spore prints show a powdery substance left behind on a surface that can help identify types of mushrooms based on the color of the deposit. For example, portobellos have a dark print that show up well on white paper. Shiitake's have a whitish print that show up better on black paper.

Are spore prints permanent? ›

Stick the film onto paper of a contrasting colour to the spores. The spore prints are permanent. The illustra- tion shows a spore print from Gymnopilus junonius made in 1988 which still retains its colour. The spores can be sampled but this entails a degree of destruction.

What paper is best for spore prints? ›

For white-spored mushrooms use black paper or clear plastic or glass. If you intend looking at the spores under a microscope, then whatever colour the spores are making the spore print on a microscope slide or (better still) a slide cover slip is ideal.

How do I activate spore print? ›

To take the spore print all you need is the top of the mushroom with the gills exposed on the underside. Place the mushroom with the gills face down onto the paper and pop a glass over the top. Leave this for 24 hours. When you return, remove the glass and gently lift the mushroom.

How to make a spore print on foil? ›

Put a drop of water on the top of the cap to help release the spores. Cover the cap with a paper cup or glass and leave for 2-24 hours, depending on the humidity and the freshness of the mushroom. The spores will fall on the paper, foil or glass, making a spore print pattern.

What color is Reishi spore print? ›

Spore print brown. Spores magnified are elliptical, with double wall. When young and fresh, ling chih looks varnished, often with striking color bands of red, yellow, and white. Lookalikes: Other Ganoderma species.

What color is a deer mushroom spore print? ›

Spore print: Salmon-pink. Stipe: White to grayish-brown.

What kind of paper do you use for a spore print? ›

Step 3: Preparing the Spore Print Surface. To create a spore print, you'll need a suitable surface for the spores to fall onto. White and black paper are commonly used for this purpose – you would make sure half of the mushroom sites over the white paper and the other half sits over the black paper.

How do you take a picture in spore? ›

While playing the adventure, you can click "C" to take a picture. (You can do it in the editor, but then the hud is covered in junk). The screen will flash and you will hear a camera noise if it successfully took a picture.
