CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2024)

A dedicated group of forensic investigators at the Las Vegas Crime Lab works to solve often-grisly crimes in Sin City. Heading up the graveyard shift (an appropriate term in this case) is supervisor D.B. Russell, a "Left Coast" Sherlock Holmes who devours crime novels. Members of Russell's team include Julie Finlay, Nick Stokes, Sara Sidle (the team's moral compass), Greg Sanders and Morgan Brody. The investigative team works closely with Capt. Jim Brass -- a seasoned detective who is a protector of CSI -- Dr. Al Robbins -- medical examiner -- and quirky lab technician David Hodges. Previous leaders of the group include Gil Grissom and Dr. Ray Langston.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

CSI shares some identical DNA with many procedural predecessors, but this slickly assembled crime series offers plenty of gruesome intrigue, reliably satisfying formula, and a compelling William Petersen leading each case.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Hal Boedeker Orlando Sentinel Arty flashbacks needlessly depict the crimes, the show lingers over gruesome details, and CSI wastes skilled actors. Feb 7, 2019 Full Review CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Linda Stasi New York Post Heading up the forensics team is Gil Grissom (William Petersen), who is appealing mostly because, like James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, he doesn't look like he belongs on TV. Petersen's got a good solid cast behind him too Sep 19, 2018 Full Review CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Dalton Ross Entertainment Weekly This new drama about Las Vegas crime scene investigators is punctuated by high tech gadgets, smart dialogue, and some really nifty camera work. Rated: B+ Sep 19, 2018 Full Review CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Peter Canavese Groucho Reviews Though a procedural somewhat in the vein of the Law & Order series, CSI punches up its storytelling with biologically invasive visual effects and a soapy interest in its characters' sexy private lives. Rated: 3/4 Apr 21, 2020 Full Review CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Rob Owen Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Despite some sloppily handled and uninteresting character introductions, tonight's premiere offers several absorbing cases, including one mysterious suicide that isn't solved immediately. Feb 7, 2019 Full Review CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) People Staff People Magazine A droll Petersen and dependable Marg Helgenberger head the competent cast, and the opener is offbeat enough to stimulate curiosity.
